1. ENGLISH FOR CHILDREN (E4C)

Our English for Children programme provides fast paced and engaging lessons tailored to the needs of young learners  
  • Begins with oral skills followed by literacy, with a strong focus on pronunciation.  
  • Allows students to increase their global competency with exposure to Canadian content and universal topics and issues.  
  • Students interact with audio, video and written material to develop their fluency, accuracy and practical command of the English language.  
  • Prepares students for Cambridge Starters, Movers, Flyers, A2 Key and B1 Preliminary exams.
  • This mixed ability class is designed to develop literacy skills for students who cannot yet read and write proficiently. Cedars familiarises learners with the sounds and appearance of the English language and introduces aspects of Canadian culture. The course helps students learn the English alphabet along with the spelling of basic words. Through songs and pictures, the students will focus on building vocabulary recognition and pronunciation. 

    Outcomes:

    • Pronounce words with growing accuracy; 
    • Read and understand the alphabet;
    • Read short, simple stories with pictures; 
    • Recognise letters of the alphabet and corresponding vocabulary; 
    • Write the letters of the alphabet; 
    • Write simple words to identify pictures.

     

    Entry Requirements:

    • Little to no reading and writing ability;
    • Spoken English proficiency may be higher.

    This class provides the perfect foundation for English language learning, with alphabet tasks and activities on letters and sounds. Hand-picked reading texts with comprehension questions present fresh, exciting content that will appeal to students. The course is designed to develop the vocabulary and literacy skills of our youngest learners and introduce them to aspects of Canadian culture. Engaging animated videos bring classes to life and motivate students to enjoy communicating in English.

    Outcomes:

    • Listen for names, words, colours and identify the correct picture;
    • Listen and understand simple classroom instructions;
    • Understand and answer simple personal questions;
    • Orally identify familiar objects and people; 
    • Verbally give one or two word descriptions of familiar objects and people;
    • Pronounce very basic words with growing accuracy.

     

    Entry Requirements:

    • Is able to recognise and write the letters of the English alphabet;
    • Near total beginner in terms of speaking, grammar and vocabulary.

    This two level course is designed to take a lower elementary student with a solid understanding of the English alphabet to the A1 level equivalent. These classes will help students develop their literacy skills at word and sentence level. There will be a focus on building vocabulary with accurate pronunciation. Through engaging and exciting classes, the students will focus on developing reading and writing skills along with speaking and listening. Through exposure to Canadian culture, students will also achieve a wider sense of global belonging and citizenship.

    Outcomes:

    • Identify names, words, colours and specific information; 
    • Identify descriptions of pictures and actions; 
    • Understand and follow both written and spoken single-step directions; 
    • Understand and answer simple personal questions; 
    • Orally describe a picture with words and short sentences that include some details;
    • Read short, simple dialogues and stories to choose a response; 
    • Read stories or factual texts with visuals and identify the main idea and a few details;
    • Read and match simple vocabulary and definitions; 
    • Write short sentences to complete a story or respond to a personal question;
    • Copy words accurately to complete a sentence; 
    • Write numbers to 101; 
    • Recognise basic grammatical ideas in English. 

     

    Entry Requirements:

    • Is able to read and write some basic words;
    • Can answer basic personal questions.

    This two level course is designed to take an elementary student with basic English reading and writing skills up to the A2 level equivalent. By helping students develop and strengthen the most important communication skills in English, these courses will build their confidence in understanding and using English. Through engaging and fun classes, the students will focus on developing speaking, listening, reading and writing, with an emphasis on pronunciation, grammatical accuracy and vocabulary development. Through exposure to Canadian culture, students will increase their global awareness.

    Outcomes:

    • Listen for names, descriptions and specific information in conversation; 
    • Understand and answer more challenging personal questions; 
    • Orally describe a picture or continue a story with complex sentences;
    • Orally explain completed or planned activities; 
    • Ask and answer simple questions about common topics; 
    • Use accurate pronunciation for basic vocabulary; 
    • Understand and follow both written and spoken multi-step directions; 
    • Read short, simple fiction and nonfiction texts for main ideas and details;
    • Read and understand vocabulary and definitions; 
    • Write words and phrases to complete sentences and dialogues; 
    • Write short stories using visuals for guidance; 
    • Write numbers to 1000

    This level, divided into two classes, is designed to take an upper elementary student with basic English reading and writing skills up to the A2+ level equivalent. By the end of the course, students will be able to make contributions in small group discussion, and engage in basic conversation. Students will be able to read and reflect on short fiction and non-fiction texts. They will be able to provide oral and written descriptions and convey their message with increasing accuracy and fluency. Students will increase their global competency with exposure to Canadian content and universal topics and issues. 

    Outcomes:

    • Listen to a story or dialogue and grasp the main ideas; 
    • Participate in group discussions on everyday topics; 
    • Follow both oral and written instructions for multi-step tasks; 
    • Participate in social interactions, including small talk; 
    • Prepare and share information with a group on an everyday topic; 
    • Use correct pronunciation for extended vocabulary; 
    • Read short fiction and non-fiction texts and understand the main ideas and details;
    • Read aloud with growing confidence in sounding out new words;
    • Write short responses in complete sentences to answer simple questions;
    • Write a simple reflection on a topic; 
    • Convey one’s intent in a written message.

    This course supports pre-intermediate students in developing their English language skills with a focus on both fluency and accuracy. Through meaningful language learning opportunities and interactive classes, students will engage with authentic topics and expand their real-world vocabulary. Students will participate in group discussions and deliver classroom presentations to share their knowledge. By interacting with audio, video, digital and written material, students will enhance their skills while they increase their global competency. With focused, meaningful tasks that encourage students to develop their fluency, accuracy and vocabulary skills, students will develop their practical English language.

    Outcomes:

    • Identify and describe explicit information including main ideas and details from short videos, podcasts, talks and presentations; 
    • Listen to short dialogues or talks and respond to simple questions verbally and/or in writing;
    • Listen actively and participate in group discussions and social interactions;
    • Prepare and share information with a group on a universal topic;

    This course prepares high intermediate students to enter an IELTS course if desired. By engaging with authentic global materials and topics, students will be given meaningful language learning opportunities. While expanding their real-world knowledge, students will also develop greater fluency and accuracy in using the English language. Students will complete genuine tasks to demonstrate their speaking and writing skills as well as their increasing vocabulary.

    Outcomes:

    • Listen to social interactions and short talks and respond to moderately complex questions and discussion prompts on both explicit and implied content; 
    • Listen to stories to understand the narrative and reflect on the topic; 
    • Prepare and give a short presentation on a global citizenship topic using some visual aids;
    • Use correct pronunciation and intonation for an expanding range of vocabulary words and phrases; 
    • Read short fiction and non-fiction texts and understand the main ideas, details, intent and how they relate to yourself or others;
    • Read aloud with growing confidence in sounding out new words and improved intonation and phrasing; 
    • Write short responses and well-structured reflections on material and topics read or heard;

    This course is designed for upper-intermediate level students who aim to pursue an IELTS course in the future. Through interactive sessions with authentic international materials and discussions on diverse topics, students will enhance their language skills in meaningful contexts. The course focuses on improving both fluency and accuracy in English, while also broadening students' understanding of real-world issues. Through practical tasks, students will demonstrate their progress in speaking, listening, writing, and vocabulary acquisition.

    Outcomes:

    • Demonstrate comprehension of social and professional interactions and extended talks, and engage in discussions answering complex questions, including both explicit and implied content;
    • Comprehend narratives in stories and reflect on their themes;
    • Deliver a presentation on a global citizenship topic, supported by visual aids;
    • Improve pronunciation and intonation while expanding vocabulary usage;
    • Understand main ideas, details, and intentions in fiction and non-fiction texts, and relate them to personal experiences or others;
    • Read aloud with increasing confidence, focusing on correct pronunciation, intonation, and expression;
