2. GENERAL ENGLISH FOUNDATIONS

The General English Foundations programme offers a blend of skills focused lessons, supplemental material and project based learning.
  • Extra class time allocated for speaking practice and the development of productive skills.
  • Go beyond the textbooks with bespoke lessons that touch upon Canadian and Vietnamese culture with engaging and enjoyable topics.
  • Learn by doing with project based learning. Bring lessons to life through videos, authentic materials and roleplays.
  • Immersed students in an English-speaking environment that cannot be replicated outside of the classroom.
  • This course supports beginner level students to develop the most important basic language skills in English. Students will participate in interactive classes that provide many opportunities for meaningful language learning. The focus will be on developing speaking, listening, reading and writing, with an emphasis on functional language use, accuracy and vocabulary development.

     

    Outcomes:

    • Listen actively and participate in short social exchanges (simple conversations, introductions, asking for information, ordering food, etc.) using simple vocabulary and formulaic phrases;
    • Understand, follow and give instructions and directions in oral and written form;
    • Read short, simple texts such as forms, tables, schedules, brochures, and short articles;
    • Identify main ideas and locate relevant details in simple texts and formatted texts;
    • Write short, simple messages (emails, comments on social media, blog entries);
    • Complete basic forms.

    This course develops a strong foundation of basic oral and written fluency in English. By the end of the course, students will be able to make contributions in small group discussions and engage in simple conversations. They will also demonstrate a growing understanding of written and spoken texts about general interest topics, and express ideas in writing at the sentence level with some clarity.

     

    Outcomes:

    • Participate in social interactions, including small talk; 
    • Listen actively and participate in group discussions on everyday topics; 
    • Prepare and share information with a group on an everyday topic;
    • Give an effective presentation on an everyday, familiar topic;
    • Build understanding of sentence structure in order to answer simple questions and complete simple tasks;
    • Write short responses or a basic paragraph on everyday topics related to school or work;
    • Use a dictionary to look up new vocabulary, check spelling, and check pronunciation.

    This course supports pre-intermediate students to develop language skills in English. Students will participate in interactive classes that provide many opportunities for meaningful language learning. Classes will include interactive tasks such as participating in group discussions, engaging with authentic video, audio, and digital material and giving class presentations. The focus will be on developing speaking, listening, reading, and writing, with an emphasis on practical use, and developing fluency, accuracy and vocabulary skills.

     

    Outcomes:

    • Participate in moderately complex social exchanges and group discussions;
    • Identify and describe explicit and some implied information from videos, podcasts, talks, and presentations;
    • Listen to short dialogues or talks and respond to simple questions and discussion prompts;
    • Prepare and share information with a group on a topic related to everyday life, school or work;
    • Prepare and give a short presentation with a visual aid (e.g. PowerPoint, Poster) on a simple topic related to global citizenship;
    • Build understanding of sentences, paragraphs and short articles related to a variety of topics in order to answer simple questions;
    • Write organized responses on everyday topics in an online journal or blog;
    • Use a dictionary to look up new vocabulary, check spelling, look up word forms, and check pronunciation.

    • Exam Prep: Cambridge B1 Preliminary

     

     

    This course supports intermediate students to develop their language skills in English. Students will participate in interactive classes that provide many opportunities for meaningful language learning. Classes will include giving presentations, leading and participating in group discussions, and engaging with authentic video, audio, and digital material. By the end of the course, students will be able to deliver short presentations, demonstrate an understanding of intermediate-level written and spoken texts and write about familiar topics with increased fluency.

     

    Outcomes:

    • Listen to social interactions and short talks and respond to questions and discussion prompts;
    • Listen actively and participate in group discussions related to everyday, academic, and work life;
    • Participate in moderately complex and challenging social exchanges and seminar-style group discussions;
    • Prepare and give a short presentation on a global citizenship topic using some visual aids         (e.g. PowerPoint, Poster);
    • Read and understand short articles, blog posts, emails, etc. in order to answer questions;
    • Write structured / organized reflections on given topics in an online journal or blog;
    • Use a dictionary to boost vocabulary, improve pronunciation, and develop independent language learning strategies.
